Haribo engagement ring preservation

It has been fifteen years since I preserved my very first Haribo sweet engagement ring for a newly engaged couple and you can read about it here: Haribo Engagement Ring

Since preserving this Haribo ring, I have been amazed at how many couples use a Haribo sweet ring to get engaged with. Whether the Haribo sweet is used as a temporary ring before choosing together a traditional engagement ring, or simply the couple who love Haribo sweets and wanted a memorable way to get engaged using their favourite sweet.

So, I thought I would highlight the types of jewellery and paperweights that I have made over the years to preserve a Haribo sweet ring. And a few hints and tips for cleaning and preparing the Haribo ring before preserving it.

The following are a few examples of Haribo jewellery and paperweights that I have previously made:

Unfortunately, Haribo rings can no longer be preserved by simply coating the ring due to Health & Safety (food imitations (safety) regulations). However, the rings can be enclosed inside a resin block. The smaller resin blocks containing the rings can be used as necklace pendant, keyrings, or simply small ornaments. The Haribo rings embedded inside larger resin blocks can be used as paperweights or ornaments.

Haribo ring preservation – Other options

The Haribo engagement ring would survive many years untouched, especially if mounted within a sealed box frame. I have had Haribo rings sent to me that were many years old, and they still looked like new (probably due to all the preservatives used within the sweet). For peace of mind, you could always spray the ring with a coat of clear acrylic spray (purchased from DIY shops or from craft shops).

Haribo ring cleaning and preparation

Before we start to work on preserving a Haribo ring, there are a few things we need to do to ensure that the ring is ready to be preserved.

Firstly, make sure the ring is completely dry and not sticky/tacky to the touch. To dry the ring, place it on a piece of absorbent kitchen towel within a warm/dry room for a few days, turning the ring over now and again.

Quite often the Haribo rings pick up dust, especially if they have warmed and become sticky to the touch during the excitement of the proposal. To clean the ring, use a lightly damp, lint free cloth to gently wipe the ring clean, and then repeat the drying process above...I am by no means an expert in cleaning Haribo rings but that is the method I would use!!

I hope you have enjoyed reading about my previous Haribo engagement ring sweet preservation projects.
